Both Cornerstone and WOW expect/make students think outside of the box. As Reading with Meaning said - as students pay attention to what is going on inside of their heads as they read, they will be amazed at what they will learn about themselves as readers. They will make connections, ask questions, draw inferences, and synthesize information.
Both WOW and Cornerstone require that students be given and take responsibility for their learning. I'm not seeing many critical thinkers yet. I can't wait to get some students in 5th grade that have been taught to "think about their thinking" since kindergarten! I needed to hear Miller's charge to not get caught up in the frenzied pace, to appreciate students for their unique personalities, and to trust them first so that they will learn to trust themselves. As Miller writes, students don't always know what they know. I have to model and guide them to become critical thinkers.
Cornerstone expects the students to be engaged in meaningful work. This is also what WOW expects.
